Gulzat Egemberdieva

Gulzat Egemberdieva studied Journalism at the Bishkek University of Humanities and has a MA from the Centre of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies of University of Toronto. She is enrolled in the PhD program at Humboldt University. Her research focuses on pre-Soviet and Soviet cultural history in Central Asia. She has worked for the Kyrgyz National Radio and TV, and is a documentary filmmaker and co-director of Chemodanfilms.

Beyond the objects in any given archive is a myriad of people, encounters and exchanges. The desire to locate the human element beneath archives is challenged by new technology. As part of ‘Life Stories and Archives’, we began a virtual ‘common archive’. Our collaborative thread addresses pertinent questions arising from shared interests in how individual’s origins, biases, networks and political struggles fuel the need to collect.
